ANC 3/4G-05 Updates, 3/27/24
Hello Good Neighbors,
This evening at 6pm the ANC will hold a special meeting to hear from the Office of Planning about proposed zoning changes to Connecticut Avenue.
The ANC is waiting to hear what will come of the Request for Proposal issued by DMPED. Several development company representatives have reached out to myself and other commissioners. I have responded to three:
-Vicki Davis, Urban Atlantic
-Genevieve Hanson, H & H Realty
-Hope Richardson, EastBanc
In each of these conversations I reiterated my own view, what has been expressed in ANC resolutions, and also what I've heard from constituents on all sides of the issue.
Thanks to the parents, teachers, and ANC commissioners in wards all over the city that signed the letter rejecting funding cuts to DCPS. Elizabeth Mitchell, a DCPS mom and member of the Ward 3 Democrats turned it into a Change.org petition which now has over 1,000 signatures. Please sign and share widely.
Our schools risk losing teachers and support staff even as we know the challenges of the Pandemic are present, many schools are packed, and there's a rise in juvenile crime. The Mayor, Chancellor Ferebee, and Deputy Mayor of Education Kihn jeopardize the city's future with these proposed cuts. (The official budget is planned to be released Wednesday, April 3) Speak out and let them know you reject defunding schools. Testify, in person or in writing, on April 4, the link is here.
Thanks to Will Perkins for highlighting this response to the DC Council on upcoming cuts.
The Ward 3 Education Network will host Deputy Mayor for Education (DME) Paul Kihn at their next meeting on Tuesday, April 9 at 7pm via Zoom.
The DME will address the Mayor's budget for next school year, particularly "around the education and workforce cluster investments." He will then take questions from the audience. Register in advance for this meeting here to get a Zoom link.
Congratulations to the Undesign the Redline team for their opening reception on April 11 at 5:30pm. Check out the event here.
If you have any artists with a knack for last minute work, the Congressional Art Competition has a deadline tomorrow.
Thanks also to DDOT's Christian Pineiro who helped a planned implementation of a "hawk light" at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Legation Street. Crashes were all too frequent here. Thanks to Lt. Ollivierre who also said he would place more officers near the corner to monitor the aggressive driving.
Did you catch the Scrabble article in the Washington Post? I've never been to a gathering but appreciate community building groups like this.
If you have issues you would like raised, help you need, ideas you have, or any other input for myself or ANC 3/4G, please get in touch.
Thank you all,
Peter
